Boycott the BCS Championship Game

In my humble opinion the BCS fails college football miserably. To claim that tonight's game will crown the National Champion is ludicrous. BCS believers, students and alumnii of Florida and Oklahoma will make their claim that their teams belong in this game and deserve the right to be crowned the National Champion. The NCAA should relive itself of its affiliation with the BCS and either go back to the Traditional Bowl schedule of yesteryear that many purists and traditionalist pine for or opt in for a true playoff system that is in line with every other team sport that is sanctioned by the NCAA. I might add that every other division of College football sanctioned by the NCAA has an anual tournament from Division I to Division III. http://ncaafootball.com/index.php?s=&url_channel_id=36&change_well_id=1

Traditionalists will tell you their stories of when they went to the Rose Bowl in 1922 and witnessed Cal and Washington and Jefferson battle to a 0 to 0 tie and oh what a glorious time it was. While the BCS supporters will tell you it's the best answer to a convoluted formula that includes human polls, computer rankings that vary with the wind, and massive amounts of cash paid to the BCS schools and conferences. It's the best of both worlds, they'll tell you.

I'm in favor of a traditional playoff system where the higher seeded teams are granted homefield advantage up to the Championship game. The Championship game should be played at a Neutral site, much like the SuperBowl every year. In 2008 68 teams played in 34 Bowl games with the BCS Championship game being played a full 5 and a half weeks after the last regular season game. I am suggesting a 24 team tournament where the top 8 ranked teams are granted a bye for the first round of the playoffs similar to the Divison II tourney. This still captures what many fans follow as the top teams in the Polls all year. This would mean a 5 week Tournament that would still cuminate with a New Year's day Clash of the titans. Those that argue time and committment needed for these student athletes to be in class is an issue have no ground to stand on. This would elliminate half of the teams still practicing for a "Bowl" game and as the weeks went on the number of Student athletes required to continue their committment to sports and studies would diminish as teams are elliminated from competition.

If this can not be accomplished, then we should go back to the Old school version of the Bowl season where each Bowl has relationships with specific conferences and the Bowls return to what they really are, exhibition games for bragging rights.
As it stands today, tonight's game means nothing in reality. Utah is the only undefeated team in the Bowl Subdivision of Division I football and by default should be the rightful owners of the National Championship trophy.

About me, I am a alumnus of Kenyon College, a NCAA Divison III school. I played Football and Basketball for Kenyon and am a 4 year letterman in Athletics. We participated in the National tournament for Basketball during my time there. I am starting this blog in hopes that there are enough people who want a change in College Football who would like to see either a true Champion or take the lipstick off the pig and carry on with the "Traditional Bowl" exhibitions.
